How to Clean and Care for a Paper Lamp

Paper lamps need less cleaning than many people expect, but they need gentler cleaning.

The main rule is simple: remove dust with as little pressure as possible and keep moisture away from the paper unless the manufacturer explicitly says otherwise.

Switch the lamp off first

Before touching the shade, switch the lamp off and let it cool.

If the lamp needs to be moved for cleaning, disconnect it from power and support the frame rather than lifting or pulling on the paper.

This is especially important with larger shades, where the paper surface may look sturdy but is still easy to crease.

Use dry, gentle dusting

For normal dust, a clean soft brush is usually the safest approach.

Work lightly across the surface rather than rubbing one area repeatedly.

A soft artist's brush or similar clean, dry tool gives you more control than a rough cloth.

Avoid strong vacuum suction directly on the shade, because thin paper can pull toward the nozzle or deform around the frame.

Keep water and cleaning sprays away

Rice paper can absorb moisture, which may stain, warp or weaken the surface.

Do not spray household cleaner onto the shade and do not wipe it as though it were glass or plastic.

The current care notes for Kaya, Mugi, Naori and Terachi all specify keeping the natural paper shade dry.

Do not scrub marks

A small mark can become more visible if the paper is rubbed aggressively.

If dry dusting does not remove it, stop before creating a larger damaged area.

Because paper shades vary in fibre, coating and construction, stain treatment should follow the care instructions for the exact lamp rather than a generic wet-cleaning method.

Handle the frame, not the paper

When moving a paper lamp, use the stable structural parts wherever possible.

Pinching or gripping the shade can leave creases that are difficult or impossible to reverse.

Kaya uses rice paper with bamboo ribs and a steel frame; Mugi uses rice paper, steel and bamboo; Naori combines rice paper and metal; and Terachi combines rice paper, metal and bamboo.

The frame is there to support the paper, so treat it as the safe point of contact.

Keep paper lamps away from damp areas

A dry living room, bedroom or study is usually a more suitable environment than a humid bathroom or a place where the lamp is regularly exposed to steam.

Humidity and splashes can affect natural paper even if no obvious damage appears immediately.

Also avoid placing the shade where it can brush against wet plants, recently cleaned surfaces or open windows during rain.

Use the correct bulb

Care is not only about cleaning.

Using the specified bulb helps avoid unnecessary heat and keeps the lamp operating as designed.

All current Lampeek paper lamps specify a compatible E26/E27 LED bulb.

Choose a low-risk position

Paper lamps last longer when they are not constantly being bumped.

A busy walkway, a narrow shelf at shoulder height or a surface beside a frequently opened cabinet can turn a delicate shade into a daily obstacle.

Give the lamp enough space that normal life can happen around it without repeated contact.

If you are still deciding where a paper lamp should sit, our Paper Lamp Size Guide can help with scale and placement.

Store it dry and protected

If a paper lamp needs to be stored, choose a dry place where nothing can press against or crush the shade.

Avoid folding, flattening or stacking objects against the paper unless the product is specifically designed to collapse that way.

Keep the lamp protected from moisture and sharp edges while it is not in use.

A little care is enough

Paper lamps do not need polishing or aggressive cleaning.

Gentle dry dusting, careful handling and sensible placement do most of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I clean a paper lamp with water?

Avoid water unless the manufacturer specifically approves a method for that exact shade. Lampeek's current paper-lamp care notes say to keep the paper dry.

What is the safest way to dust a rice-paper lamp?

Use a clean, soft, dry brush with very little pressure. Switch the lamp off first and support the frame while you work.

Can I vacuum a paper lampshade?

Direct strong suction can deform delicate paper. Gentle dry brushing gives you more control and is usually the safer starting point.

How should I store a paper lamp?

Keep it in a dry, protected place where the shade cannot be crushed, creased or exposed to moisture.
